It’s Not About You

It’s Not About You

So you want to be a great leader?  You want to give people a great impression about you and your leadership?  You want to make progress with your leadership?

Then you need to do this one simple thing: make your leadership all about others.

Revolve your attitude and actions around others.  Serve those around you. Focus everything that you do on how it impacts the people closest to you.  And be humble.  It’s not about you.  It’s about others.

Now how does this make sense if you are trying to be a great leader and make a great impression?  It would seem counter-productive to make things all about others when you are trying to make a good impression of your leadership on those around you.  So how can making things all about others actually make a good impression for you?

The way this works is this: it shows everything about you.  It shows who you are.  It shows what is important to you.  By making your leadership all about the people around you, it shows what kind of leader you are.  You will make an impression on people when they can see what your leadership is all about.  And relevant leaders make their leadership all about others; it’s not about them.  It is all about others.

By making things not about you, that is actually the best way to make a great impression about you.
